The Cubs announced Sunday that they have traded pitcher. Arodys Vizcaino, to the Atlanta Braves for infielder, Tommy La Stella. The Cubs also received Braves’ No. 4 international signing bonus slot while Atlanta acquired slots 2, 3, and 4 from the Cubs.
La Stella is left-handed hitting infielder who played in 93 games in 2014 as a rookie with the Braves. He batted .251 with a .328 on-base percentage.
After being traded to the Cubs in December of 2012, Vizcaino spent the 2013 season recovery from Tommy John surgery. He finally made his Cub debut in 2014, pitching in only five innings as a September call up.
Vizcaino’s time with the Cubs was sort of a disapointment. He came in as a top 100 prospect, but after missing all of 2012 and 2013 due to Tommy John surgery, went from a front line starter to the bullpen.
Still at 24, Vizcaino can throw 95 mph, which still gave scouts faith in his ability. He was the 10th rated prospect in the Cubs system according to MLB.com this past season.
La Stella is going to have to find playing time with Starlin Castro and Javier Baez clogging up the middle of the infield. And with Kris Bryant on the horizon, third base is out of the question.
One reason I am excited to see La Stella at Wrigley Field is screaming his name every time he bats.
