Ryan Dempster (3-4) has been the tough luck loser of the Cubs’ starting rotation as of late. Loser of his last 4 decisions, Dempster took the mound Tuesday night vs. the Dodgers (25-20).
Dempster went out and pitched 8 innings of shutout ball, insuring that he wouldn’t lose his 5 straight. In his 8 innings, Dempster only allowed 3 hits and surrendered 1 base on balls while striking out 7 batters.
The Cubs only touched Dodgers’ starter Clayton Kersahw (4-3) for 1 run in 6 innings but it was just enough. Derrek Lee provided all of Chicago’s offense. In the 6th, Lee singled home Ryan Theriot. And then in the 8th, Lee went yard with a 2 run shot to make the score 3-0.
Carlos Marmol made sure that score hold while picking up his 10th save of the season. Marmol struck out 2 more batters Tuesday night, continuing to K opposing batters at an impressive rate.
The Cubs (22-24) have a problem that most teams would love to have. They have 6 starters for only 5 spots. Carlos Zambrano threw 73 pitches during a simulated game on Monday and appears to be on track to re-enter the rotation. It appears that Tom Gorzelanny is the odd man out despite pitching extremely well this season. Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun Times reported that Cubs’ GM Jim Hendry is listening to offers for the lefty.
Gorzelanny (2-4) will take the mound Wednesday night and hopes to lead the Cubs to a series win. It won’t be easy though, because the Dodgers are countering with Chad Billingsley (5-2).
