If you’re a Bears fan, or football fan in general, you should be excited.
Why? Because today the Chicago Bears opened up their training camp for the 2010 season, meaning football season is right around the corner.
The Bears arrived in Bourbonnais on Thursday, as first practice was scheduled for 3 PM today.
The first day of camp doesn’t prove anything, as players go through conditioning tests and some walk-throughs. It’s just good to be back in the swing of things.
After a disappointing 2009 season, Lovie Smith knows that 2010 is a
make-or-break year for him. He wants a successful season, which will have to include a division title, and it all starts here with training camp.
Early reports indicate that all 80 players are healthy and will participate to start training camp.
Mike Martz brings his offense to the Chicago Bears, and many players have never ran his type of offense.
So far, the players seem to be catching on quickly, according to Martz.
Quarterback Jay Cutler knows that this is his team, he just needs to show it on the field. Cutler will have all of training camp to work with the offense, and learn Martz’s system.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Bears need improvement.
They signed free agent Julius Peppers, brought safety Chris Harris back, and drafted Florida safety Major Wright.
Word around Bourbonnais is that Tommie Harris has spent his offseason in the gym, and is healthy.
The defense was horrible last season, but get their leader in Brian Urlacher back. I’m curious how the defense plays this season.
Some noticeable things from today’s practice:
-Johnny Knox and Devin Hester were both fielding punts.
-Caleb Hanie got significant reps.
-Desmond Clark caught made some impressive catches.
-Frank Omiyale was replaced by Kevin Schaffer in drills, after false starting.
The Bears will practice Saturday at 7 PM, Sunday at 3 PM, and Monday at noon. Each day, the practices will get more involved with drills.
There are 15 days until the Bears open up the preseason at San Diego.
