Brandon Paul may be leaving the Fighting Illini this year as he will enter the 2013 NBA Draft, but not before his younger brother takes a spot on that very same roster. Western Michigan forward Darius Paul is opting to move to Champaign and play while attending the University of Illinois.
He broke the news via Twitter on Saturday:
His brother Brandon responded by retweeting the statement and instagramming a picture of he and his two brothers asking the Illinois community to welcome Darius.
A bit bigger than Brandon, Darius stands 6’8” and will be joining the Illini after his freshman year at Western Michigan where he averaged 10.4 PPG and 5.7 rebounds. He led all Mid-American Conference freshmen in those categories and was subsequently named MAC Freshman of the Year.
There was a coaching staff change in Western Michigan’s program and following that Paul had revealed in late April that he would be transferring. Upon the announcement, a handful of schools had been in contact with the freshman. Illinois was an appealing option for Paul being that his brother just finished off a successful career there along with it being a little closer to home, in Gurnee.
Because of the transfer, Paul will be sitting out his sophomore year but we will anticipate his continued success in the 2014-2015 season.
