Viciedo made his debut, finally against the Seattle Mariners. The Tank played right and batted fifth. The uber prospect went 2/3 with a homer and 3 RBIs. “It was a perfect condition to come out here and do what I did,” noted a clearly satisfied Viciedo, “It feels really good. All the conditioning, all the work I’ve been doing, to get three RBIs today and a home run, that felt really good.”
As I wrote earlier Viciedo brings a cool confidence even among the high expectations. Tyler Flowers, a Charlotte teammate of Viciedo said, “Hit the hell out of that one, didn’t he? It was about 10 feet high.” About Dayan’s 4th inning shot. Flowers added his first career grand slam in the game.
The arrival of Viciedo brings the likelihood of diminished at bats for failed DH, Adam Dunn. “Right now, we have to go by winning games”, Said Ozzie of Dunn, adding, “He can’t make any excuse if we bench him. I’ve been taking a lot of heat from everyone, even from my own family, ‘How long are you going to play him?’ I have no choice.
When asked for his take on the benching, Dunn said, “I’m a realist. I’m not like an idiot; we’re right in the middle of things. What do you do? What do you say? I’ve done it to myself. It’s not going to change the way I go about things.”
Ozzie was a bit fired up when questions were posed about the timing of the Viciedo call-up, “I don’t give a shit what people say. Guillen said. “People out there can have their own opinion; that’s their job … talk.
“There’s nothing I can do about it. I get paid to manage a team. In the time they wanted that kid here, I didn’t have any place for him. We would’ve had to make a trade or release somebody. I wasn’t in the position to say, ‘Bring him up.’ I couldn’t play with 26 players. I don’t play him because it’s not my decision who’s coming and who’s not.
“But I like that. I hope they blame me, like ‘Wow, we lose this season because Viciedo wasn’t with the White Sox, “as long as I can sleep well and know I did the right thing, that’s all that counts for me. They got their own opinion. They don’t pay my salary.”
