On Monday, Chicago Bears defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker had a strong message about issues with the culture in the locker room. The Bears season is over after a 5-12 record in a year they expected to compete for a playoff spot in general manager Ryan Poles’ third season with the team.
The Bears started 4-2 but went on a 10-game losing streak that started after their bye. Head coach Matt Eberflus was fired the day after Thanksgiving.
The Bears are looking at several coaching candidates this offseason, and former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is expected to be interviewed this cycle.
Demarcus Walker takes shot at the Chicago Bears’ culture
Per Chris Emma with 670 The Score, Walker, who played for the Titans under Vrabel, gave an answer as to what the former three-time Super Bowl-winning linebacker for the New England Patriots could give the Bears if Chicago was to hire him as Eberflus’ replacement.
Walker took issue with the undisciplined nature of the Bears and said Vrabel would clean it up.
“A lot of (expletive) is going to be cut out,” Walker said. “I’m sorry, but that’s true. Disciplined will be laid right down from the first day. A lot of those small things that we were doing and got away with, that won’t happen. Just from my personal experience.”
Should the Bears go with an experienced head coach?
Walker’s answer is as much a shot at the locker room as it is to Poles. Poles continuously praised Eberflus for the culture he helped build in Chicago. Players knew that wasn’t the case.
It’s worth noting that Vrabel is a candidate who is expected to want his own general manager brought in for any job he accepts.
It’s also worth reflecting on Walker’s suggestion at head coach. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is a sexy name for the fanbase, but veteran players are hinting the team needs a culture change.
Wide receiver Keenan Allen said he only wants to return to Chicago in 2025 if they hire the right coach, and he wants one with experience.
