Lou Piniella finally made some drastic changes to the lineup.
Some changes include the benching of Ryan Theriot, making Mike Fontenot the everyday starting 2nd baseman. Derrek Lee, Marlon Byrd and Aramis Ramirez were benched on Tuesday as well. Xavier Nady played 1st and batted 3rd while Tyler Colvin played center and batted cleanup.
Despite the changes, the offense only had 7 hits including 4 from Nady. Nady also provided the only scoring for Chicago by hitting a 2 run homer in the 3rd.
Ted Lilly (1-5) gave the Cubs (24-29) a quality start including 7.2 innings of 3 run ball. The Cubs led 2-1 until the 8th when Lilly served up the game winning 2 run home run to Andrew McCutchen.
In recent years, the Cubs have demolished the Pirates (22-31) but that hasn’t been the case this year. With Tuesday’s loss, Chicago dropped to 1-7 against the lowly Pirates.
The Cubs will attempt to avoid being swept tomorrow with their opening day starter on the mound. Carlos Zambrano (1-3) will return to the rotation after an unsuccessful stint in the bullpen. Hopefully, Big Z can return to his former “ace” self.
Even if Zambrano struggles, at least his bat will be in the lineup.
