The Chicago Cubs will have some interesting decisions to make in what will be an important offseason for the franchise. After losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games in the NLCS, the Cubs are hoping to get right back there next year.
But this roster will undergo a makeover.
One of those players that appears to be out the door is outfielder Jon Jay. He was signed on a one-year deal by the Cubs last offseason and platooned in the outfield as well as served as the team’s leadoff hitter at times.
Jay slashed .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances for the Cubs in 2017. The Cubs could be looking to free up more time for Albert Almora and Ian Happ in the outfield and Jay could be the guy that doesn’t come back.
On Tuesday, he posted this Instagram which might be a clue as to what’s going on:

On the whole, if Jay is willing to take another one-year deal (or a modest two-year deal that won’t burn you in year two if he falls off the table in 2018), it’s probably worth keeping him around for the value he provides in a 4th/5th outfielder role.
