Former Champaign Centennial basketball star Rayvonte Rice is transferring from Drake to Illinois.
Rice chose Illinois over Xavier according to ESPN. Rice played two years at Drake in the Missouri Valley Conference, averaging 15.4 points and 5.3 rebounds.
Rice will of course have to sit out a year, but for 2013 he’ll look to replace seniors Brandon Paul and DJ Richardson at guard while providing some upper class leadership for future freshmen Jalen James, Malcolm Hill and possibly Kendrick Nunn and Jabari Parker.
Rice isn’t in the same mold as Paul and Richardson though, coming in at 6’4″ 240, reminding some of a former Illini in a linebackers body, Sergio McClain.
A solid pickup for new Illini coach John Groce.
