After seeing Ian Happ reach the big leagues and have a big impact on the Chicago Cubs in 2017, the organization has yet another prospect waiting in the wings.
Eloy Jimenez is putting together one heck of a year for Myrtle Beach in Class High-A baseball. The 20-year-old is hitting .279/.358/.510 with 8 home runs and 32 RBI’s in 165 plate appearances this season.
His play has earned him some recognition.
Jimenez was named the eighth-best prospect in all of baseball in Baseball Prospectus’ mid-season rankings.
Here’s part of what the site said about Jimenez:
Jimenez is the first prospect on our list that is likely to end up pretty far right on the defensive spectrum. So you’d expect a hell of a bat.
The outfielder took over the top spot in the Cubs farm system after the team traded away shortstop Gleyber Torres to the New York Yankees for Aroldis Chapman.
Jimenez has raked since joining the Pelicans after missing the start of the season with an injury. He participated in the Class A Advanced Carolina League’s Home Run Derby, breaking a light with a home run.
He was also in the 2016 MLB Futures Game where he showed off his impressive defense.
The Cubs are going to be in a situation where they have to determine if they want to be buyers at the trade deadline. But they shouldn’t be willing to mortgage the future in a year where they are struggling.
I’d be shocked to see Jimenez part of any deal as we approach the deadline.
