No team still in existence has more U.S. Open Cup titles than the Chicago Fire, who have won four titles in their 17-year history. Bested only by Maccabi Los Angeles and the storied Bethlehem Steel, the Fire are tied with Greek American AA, the Philadelphia Ukrainians and the dominant Fall River Marksmen on the all-time list.
Of the five teams with three titles, two are still alive and well in MLS. D.C. United won the title in 2013, and the Fire were well along in their quest to win it in 2014 before Wednesday night’s defeat.
The Fire fell 6-0 to Seattle Sounders FC, the other team with three titles, at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Washington in the semifinals last night. The Fire weren’t necessarily outplayed as much as the scoreline would suggest, trailing only 19-14 in shots and actually taking 57.2% of the possession. The key figure to the Sounders’ success was the shots on target. The Sounders managed to put 11 on target, while the Fire only accrued three.
The Fire played a lineup consisting mostly of starters with the notable exception of Mike Magee, who was suspended from Open Cup play. Magee, however, did not let himself go unnoticed Wednesday night.
