The Fire announced Friday the signing of forward Robert Earnshaw, adding to a mix of players at the position that already includes reigning MVP Mike Magee and Quincy Amarikwa.
The Zambian-born Welsh international comes to Chicago at age 33, beyond his prime but with something left in the tank. Earnshaw has spent most of his career in England, but also has experience with clubs in Scotland, Israel and Canada.
Earnshaw has 178 career senior team goals in 450 games between Cardiff City, Greenock Morton, West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, Derby County, Nottingham Forest, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Toronto FC and Blackpool. Additionally, Earnshaw has scored 16 goals in 58 games with Wales plus one goal in 10 games with the Welsh U21 national team.
Earnshaw will be added to the roster upon receipt of a P1 Visa and an International Transfer Certificate. The Fire did not disclose the financial terms or length of the contract, though the MLS Players Union periodically releases salary figures.
Earnshaw made just one appearance with Blackpool of Sky Bet Championship, the second division off English soccer, in 2014.
The Fire had been linked to United States midfielder Jermaine Jones in recent weeks, and the deal with Earnshaw may or may not signify an end of that pursuit.
