The Fire announced on Sunday that the club had signed midfielder Chris Ritter out of Northwestern University as a Homegrown Player.
The native of Winnetka, Illinois played youth soccer for FC United before joining the Fire Academy. Ritter later played in the Fire system with the club’s Premier Development League affiliate as well as playing his college soccer with the Wildcats.
Ritter is a solid all-around player, capable of making contributions on both sides of the pitch, as he notched fourteen goals and thirteen assists in eighty-four games in his college career and in 2012 was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
Ritter also earned honors as a freshman, being named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2009, and continued to earn recognition throughout his college career, twice being named to the First Team All-Big Ten Team and once to the Second Team All-Big Ten Team.
The signing makes Ritter the fourth Homegrown Player in club history, joining Victor Pineda, Kellen Gulley and the recently signed Harrison Shipp.
