The matchups for the the third round of the U.S. Open Cup (in which MLS clubs enter the competition) have been announced. The Fire will play the winner of the Seattle Sounders U-23’s versus the Charlotte Eagles match, with location dependent on the victor. Should Seattle win the match, the game will be played at Toyota Park, the home stadium of the Fire in Bridgeview, Illinois. If Charlotte prevails, the match will be played on the road against the USL Professional Division side.
The Fire have previously won the U.S. Open Cup in 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2006, and have been runners-up in 2004 and 2010. Chicago found less success last season, falling to the Michigan Bucks of the Premier Development League on the road in added extra time.
Regardless of matchup or location, the game will take place on Tuesday, May 28.
