This former top prospect who was recently signed by the Chicago White Sox is optimistic for the 2025 season.
The Chicago White Sox will have one of the youngest starting rotations in all of Major League baseball and they will need a few of their more seasoned acquisitions to the rotation to take a leadership role to guide some of the young arms. One of those newly signed players looking to remake himself with the Chicago White Sox and become a leader in the starting rotation is 27-year-old Bryse Wilson.
Who is Bryse Wilson?
Bryse Wilson was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB June Amateur Draft, making his Major League debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2018 at just 20-years-old. Not being able to figure it out as either a starter or a reliever for the Atlanta Braves they chose to trade Wilson to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Richard Rodríguez during the 2021 trade deadline.
Not fairing any better during his two years with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Wilson had his contract purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers in January of 2023. While with the Milwakuee Brewers Wilson had success as a reliever for the Brewers in 2023 but struggled to replicate that success for 2024 and the Brewers ultimately granted Wilson his release in November. Just over a month after being released by the Brewers the Chicago White Sox signed Bryse Wilson to a one-year $1.05 million deal for this season.
In a recent interview given to MLB Network Radio Bryse Wilson sounded excited about joining a young Chicago White Sox team. Saying during his interview that he was looking to try and make thirty-two starts this year be one of his goals by stating:
“I’m just looking forward to reestablishing myself as a starter and, you know, kind of taking over a little bit of a leadership role in whatever way needed.”
“Just kind of take just the experience that I have helping some of these other guys”
Wilson also adding in his thoughts about the Chicago White Sox as an organization:
“It’s an organization that really pushes showing up to work every day and doing the best you can,”
How will Bryse Wilson be used by the Chicago White Sox?
Basically, Wilson is on a one-year prove it deal to show that he is capable of being a starter at the Major League level. Still relatively young there is room for Wilson to still turn it around and develop into a solid middle of the rotation piece. Given Wilsons situation the Chicago White Sox will be presented with this question: If Bryse Wilson has success will they trade him or will they keep him?
Signing Wilson was a low-cost high reward type of deal that hopefully will break in both the White Sox and Wilsons favor. If Wilson can have success to begin the season, then the Chicago White Sox may entertain trading him being his value will be at his highest. Or will they prefer to keep him is he can prove to be successful and have him be a part of the rotation for top prospect Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith are ready to join the rotation?
I believe the White Sox will favor the former and not the latter being that if Bryse Wilson finds success, he will be seeking a long-term deal worth a decent amount of money. Given the young crop of starter already in the rotation like Jonathan Cannon, Sean Burke, and Drew Thorpe, and with Smith and Schultz almost ready to go I think trading Wilson to help in another area is what the Chicago White Sox will end up doing.
Overall, this is a good signing
Even though Wilson hasn’t thrown a pitch yet for the Chicago White Sox they signing is good even if Wilson doesn’t have the success, they intended him to have. Wilson wanting to come in an being a leader is an intangible that isn’t quantifiable. Along with his experience and coming to the Major Leagues at such a young age he can relate to some of the struggles his teammates will end up encountering. Overall, this was a good signing and hopefully Bryse Wilson can have success on the field as well as be a good mentor to bring the White Sox success.
