The Chicago Cubs passed on the opportunity to land Alex Bregman in the hopes that Matt Shaw would have a stellar campaign in 2025 at third base. Shaw was on a shortlist of many analysts’ picks to be the MLB’s Rookie of the Year in the preseason.
Instead, Shaw was sent to Iowa last week after struggling at the plate. He earned a .172 batting average before the Cubs decided to give Rule 5 candidate Gage Workman a chance at third base.
Workman has proven to be a liability on defense.
A Chicago Cubs rookie had an off night on Tuesday

In the seventh inning of Tuesday night’s game, Workman let a ground ball go by him while the bases were loaded. The Los Angeles Dodgers took a lead via their next at-bat.
The three runs the Cubs gave up were all from the unearned error from Workman.

Workman is batting .273/.333/.364 with three hits and two RBI.
Fans on social media call for Gage Workman to be cut

Many Cubs fans wouldn’t mind seeing the team let Workman leave for the Detroit Tigers after his start to the season.
“Can the Cubs please cut Gage Workman tonight after the game! He’s terrible,” wrote a fan.
