The IceHogs’ season abruptly came to a halt earlier this evening, when they lost game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinals to the Griffins 5-3. The Griffins take the series 4-1 and move on to the AHL Western Conference Finals.
Teemu Pulkkinen put the Griffins on the scoreboard just 5 minutes into the 1st period. Then at 59 seconds into the 2nd period, the Griffins’ Andy Miele made it 2-0. Rockford promptly pulls netminder Michael Leighton and replaces him with Mac Carruth. The Griffins will go on to score 2 more goals while the IceHogs only score 1. Going into the 3rd period, Rockford has only 9 SOG total for the first 40 minutes of play. Somehow the Hogs come back strong in the 3rd, scoring twice. Those goals were by Zach Miskovic and Brandon Mashinter. But, with the addition of a empty netter by Grand Rapids, the deficit was just too big to overcome and the Hogs lose 5-3.
The IceHogs overall had a very outstanding season this year. It’s a sure bet we’ll be seeing many of those young men playing for the Blackhawks next season. Blackhawks’ singer, Jim Cornelison, performed the Star Spangled Banner before the game.
