Wrigley Field might be hosting an MLB All-Star Game sooner than we thought.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred discussed the possibility while speaking with the media ahead of the 2017 MLB All-Star Game.
And he dropped a big hint that will make Cubs fans happy.
Manfred spoke on upcoming hosts for MLB All-Star Games and mentioned that Wrigley Field was in the running.
“The Cubs are certainly in the mix for that next (selection). I’ll probably do three (sites) at once, is my current thinking,” Manfred said via the Chicago Tribune. “They certainly are in the mix but there are way more than three clubs that are in that mix.”
But when will that be?
Washington is scheduled to host the 2018 All-Star Game and Cleveland will host in 2019. Manfred is currently looking at hosts for 2020, 2021 and 2022. That’s where the Cubs come in.
The Cubs are currently in the middle of renovations to Wrigley Field with the visitors clubhouse set to be ready for the 2019 season. They are also adding four new club/restaurants in the stadium as well as renovating the press box, slated to be the final piece of the renovation.
Oh, and that new hotel across the street will be completed by then.
Manfred mentioned that a team getting a new stadium, city involvement and things done to help benefit the club like renovations.
The Cubs haven’t hosted an MLB All-Star Game since 1990 but depending on what happens in the next year or so, they could be very close.
