Quarterback Jay Cutler arguably had his best season under offensive coordinator Adam Gase this past year. Cutler limited his turnovers and executed Gase’s gameplan and it’s likely earned him another year in Chicago.
But what about the future of the quarterback position?
There’s been speculation over the past few seasons that the Bears would draft a quarterback to replace Cutler eventually, but David Fales is the only result of that speculation. But this upcoming 2016 NFL Draft could be the one where the Bears pick their future quarterback. And for Cutler, he seems fine with that.
“I would say I get it, I totally get it,” Cutler said in an interview with David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune. “At some point it’s going to happen. They’re going to get somebody else. I’m not going to play until I’m 43. I understand that. But on the flip side, I’d be like, we really could have gotten somebody who can help me right now. So that would be my two reactions. If they do it, I will help whoever they bring in as much as I could and kind of see how it unfolds.”
The Bears hold the 11th pick in the upcoming draft but with so many needs on the defensive side of the ball as well as offensive line, quarterback likely isn’t the top priority.
Cutler’s comment about getting him some help is also interesting. The Bears offense did struggle at times due to injuries, but they will at least get wide receiver Kevin White back who missed the entire 2015 season. The decisions to keep Alshon Jeffery and Martellus Bennett will be something to look out for this off-season.
