The Chicago Cubs have made news in hidden fashion (what’s new from Theo/Jed?) as Jeff Baker has been traded to the Detroit Tigers and top prospects OF Brett Jackson/3B Josh Vitters has been called up.
The Cubs traded utility man Baker to the Tigers for 2 players to be named later. The day that both players have to be named by in August 31st. I’m not surprise at all and I thought Baker would have been traded by the non-waiver deadline. So, not even a week later, Baker was indeed traded. Baker was a free agent after the year and was making 1.375 million this year. Baker was good coming off the bench for the Cubs and was a lefty killa’. He manly played against LHP’s and look for the same in Detroit.
Now to all the news Cub fans have been waiting for … the Cubs have called up 24-year old OF Brett Jackson and 22-year old 3B Josh Vitters.
Brett Jackson in in the line-up today, playing CF and batting 2nd. Cubs.com has Jackson as the Cubs number 1 prospect (that has indeed changed now). Jackson does take walks, has speed and can get on base. However, he does strikeout a lot, but I do see that changing. I’m just glad I can see him in the majors and see what he does.
Josh Vitters is not in the line-up today, but we will see him at 3B in place of the slumping Luis Valbuena. I expect to see him tomorrow vs. the San Diego Padres at the nigh start (9 o’clock p.m.). Cubs.com has Vitters rated at the Cubs’ 11th best prospect. Vitters is having a great season, but his only down is his defense and he doesn’t take a lot of walks. But he does have some pop and isn’t too slow either.
All I can say is I am so excited!!
