The 2017 MLB All-Star break couldn’t come fast enough for the Chicago Cubs and on Sunday, it looked as if they were already on break.
Pittsburgh plated 10 runs in the first inning against the Cubs at Wrigley Field including a grand slam from Francisco Cervelli and a solo shot from Andrew McCutchen. It went from bad to embarrassing.
The Cubs now sit at 43-45 on the season and are 5.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers in what has been an extremely frustrating first half.
Chicago hasn’t been able to get on track and when it looks like they are going to turn it around, they fall flat. It’s just been that way.
But don’t think the Cubs are going to just give up and quit on the season. Instead, manager Joe Maddon has other ideas as he explained in his postgame press conference via CSN Chicago:
The good news for the Cubs is that despite playing this bad to start the year they are only 5.5 games back. The bad news is that they are tied with the St. Louis Cardinals and that the Brewers are actually good.
Milwaukee hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down this season and could add a few more pieces to make that push to the playoffs.
Chicago still has 10 games left against the Brewers in the 2017 season. But with a stretch of games against the Cardinals, White Sox and Brewers coming up, ending July on a good note is key if they want to hang around.
