Thursday got ugly early for the Chicago Cubs as they fell behind 9-0 to the Cincinnati Reds. Despite battling back to tie the game in the fifth, their bullpen allowed four runs as they fell 13-10.
But that wasn’t the worse news.
Starter Jon Lester didn’t last past the second inning, giving up seven earned runs. He left the game with left latissimus dorsi tightness and now the injury could cost him some significant time.
The Cubs will likely place Lester on the DL Friday but they are hoping that he isn’t gone for the long run. He’s going to see Dr. Gryzlo in Chicago on Friday according to Patrick Mooney.

Despite going on the DL, the Cubs believe Lester will miss just 1-2 starts as reported by NBC Sports:
The Cubs are now saying that Lester will miss 1-2 starts. They are sending him to see Dr. Stephen Gryzlo for a more in-depth exam, and it’s possible Gryzlo will determine the injury is more serious, but at the moment the assessment seems cautiously optimistic.
Mike Montgomery, who pitched well in relief of Lester, will take his place in the rotation. But with the NL Central as tight as it is, the Cubs can’t afford Lester to miss any significant time.
