When the Chicago Cubs open up the 2019 season on March 28th in Texas against the Rangers, it will be Jon Lester getting the nod and that’s not a surprise.
Joe Maddon officially named Lester his Opening Day starter for 2019 on Monday, telling reporters that the 35-year-old will be the starter, leading the Cubs rotation this season. This will be the fourth time Lester has started Opening Day for the Cubs, doing so also in 2015, 2017 and 2018.
In 32 starts last season, Lester went 18-6 with a 3.32 ERA. He started in the Cubs’ Wild Card game against Colorado, giving up 1 earned run and 4 hits in 6 innings. He was replaced in the 7th with the Cubs having a big scoring opportunity that they capitalized on.
While Lester is starting Opening Day, Maddon has yet to commit to what his rotation will be. He will announce that later on.
