Jordan Brand launched its RE2PECT campaign as a slogan for former New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter. But now it’s turning into something big for the city of Chicago.
On Wednesday, Jordan Brand honored six members of the Chicago community for their commitment to keep the community great.
The brand teamed up with Champs Sports to add these six to the Wall of Champions at their newest downtown store on State Street. Each recipient spoke to the media and group of attendees to describe their journey and how they reached where they are today by earning RE2PECT.
Those six individuals were:
- Aleta Clark – Community Activist/Founder of ‘Hugs No Slugs’
- Andrew Barber – Creator of Fake Shore Drive
- Jabari Parker – 4x Illinois high school basketball Champion, high school All-American, NBA player, member of the Jordan Brand family
- Kevin Coval – Director of Young Chicago Authors/Founder of Louder Than A Bomb
- Monica Haslip – Founder of Little Black Pearl
- Sonny Parker – Founder of the Sonny Parker Foundation, Chicago basketball legend
Each one of those six recipients have faced trials and tribulations to get to where they are at today but have overcome that. Now they become the latest to be honored by Jordan Brand, which has a commitment to the RE2PECT Above All Mindset.
Not all of the recipients were NBA players like Parker, but they each impact the community in their own special way. And they are appreciative of Parker taking the time to participate.
“People look up to him; a lot of young boys want to be basketball players,” Clark said. “Just to see somebody of his status come here, come back to the community, back into the city and give back, that’s inspirational.”
Parker knew just how important of an honor this is. The former Simeon star is currently a member of the Milwaukee Bucks, but returns to Chicago as much as he can.
“It’s an honor to be in my hometown being recognized alongside my father and other amazing leaders from our community,” Parker said. “The initial RE2PECT campaign was inspiring, and I’m excited to see how that iconic moment has evolved into a mindset shared by me and the entire Jordan Brand family. The people being honored today truly represent what it means to put RE2PECT Above All, which is what I aspire to do on and off the court.”
