Today the Chicago Cubs took on the San Francisco Giants and the cold weather took over the Cubs offense. Like we’ve been seeing all season long, the Cubs bats were non-existent. Especially when runners are in scoring position. The Giants took a 2-1 series lead by winning 2-0. The Cubs record now stands at 4-7.
Winning pitcher: Madison Bumgarner (3-0)
Losing pitcher: Jeff Samardzija (1-2)
Save: None
Scoring plays:
*Giants 5th inning: Gregor Blanco singles to right field, driving home Andres Torres – Cubs 0, Giants 1.
*Giants 6th inning: Pablo Sandoval singles to center field, driving home Marco Scutaro – Cubs 0, Giants 2.
Giants 7th inning: Marco Scutaro singles to right field, driving home Madison Bumgarner – Cubs 0, Giants 3.
Cubs 7th inning: Dioner Navarro hits a 2-run home run to left-center, driving home Alberto Gonzalez – Cubs 2, Giants 3.
Final Score: Cubs 2, Giants 3.
The good: Honestly there’s not much from this game. However, there was one player that had a good game. Maybe Alfonso Soriano is starting to heat up. Soriano went 3-4 with 3 singles and a stolen base in today’s game. Let’s hope that’s the start to his hot streak!
The bad: It seems like this is a daily topic, but Brett Lillibridge. He can’t hit to save his life and struck out with men on 2nd and 3rd with one out. On Tuesday, Alberto Gonzalez is the likely player to be sent down when Darwin Barney is activated. But I will think hard about sending Lillibridge down and keeping Gonzalez. I will give some props to Lillibirdge, though. He did make a great catch in short left to save a run.
The ugly: The Cubs CAN’T hit with runners in scoring position. This right here is an early trend to the early part of the 2013 season. In today’s game, the Cubs had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs and didn’t score. Welington Castillo struck out, Brett Lillibridge struck out (go figure), Alberto Gonzalez intentional walked and Jeff Samardzija hit a soft groundout to the shortstop.
Tomorrow the Cubs and Giants will face off once again in the series finale. Edwin Jackson will take the ball for the Cubs and Tim Lincecum will take the ball for the Giants. You can see the game on WGN and can hear the game on WGN 720.
