According to the Chicago Tribune, pitcher Kerry Wood is expected to re-sign with the Chicago Cubs. We heard a few weeks ago that if Wood were to not re-sign as a player, he would join the Cubs coaching staff. Now we know it will be as a player and to he will serve a role in keeping the bullpen strong and in check. The Tribune states that the Cubs and Wood have began talking and he will return.
Kerry Wood re-signed with the Cubs before the 2011 season on a 1 year, $1.5 million contract. Wood was gone for two years after the Cubs decided not to resign him following the 2008 season. All Wood wanted was to play for the Cubs and finish his career on the North Side. Wood pitched pretty good in 2011, with an ERA of 3.35 with 57 strikeouts and 21 walks in 51 innings.
Wood was eventually shut down on September 20th with a knee injury. He got arthroscopic surgery when the 2011 season concluded and it was a success, and should be ready for the start of the 2012 season.
Back in September, Wood said he’ll retire if he does not resign with the Cubs. That’s a guy who has the Cubs in his heart. I don’t know how the contract will look, but it will probably favor the Cubs. We could see a contract very similar to his previous one.
