Kirk Herbstreit’s comments on Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams during the Thursday Night Football broadcast went viral
The Chicago Bears lost their 10th consecutive game last night in a 6-3 stinker against the Seattle Seahawks. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams finished the game completing 16 of his 28 passes for 122 yards and had his interception streak snapped on the last play of the game.
On the final Thursday night football game of the 2024-25 season, Amazon analyst Kirk Herbstreit did not mince his words when speaking on the first year of Williams’ NFL career.
“I think the thing that remains to be seen — and only time will tell — is if he understands what it takes to be an NFL quarterback as far as the preparation, as far as first guy there, last guy leaving,” Herbstreit said. “And I’m not suggesting he’s not doing those things, but just all of those little things that really make the great quarterbacks special.”
Chicago Bears fans did not receive these comments from the analyst in the greatest light. Williams receiving criticism for his play this year isn’t something new, but having these words come out on a national broadcast put the whole football world on notice.
Williams has now been sacked 66 times this season, which includes the six times he was taken down on Thursday. The poor offensive line play throughout the entire campaign hasn’t given the number one overall draft selection much of a fighting chance, yet he accomplished the feat of being the only rookie signal-caller in franchise history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season.
What Caleb Williams has done so far this season for the Chicago Bears has proven that he is an NFL-level quarterback
While the wins have not been there in the USC product’s first year in the league, Willams has shown that he has the potential to be a great player based on the success he has had with what little support he has around him. Williams is the only rookie quarterback to have multiple different play-callers in his first season and had a head coaching change during the season.
Through it all, the gun-slinger has shown plenty of promise to keep Chicago Bears fans excited and to keep most of the haters at bay for the time being. There will always be critics no matter what, and Williams has sure caught plenty of heat as a part of the failed season for the franchise. Up until last night’s battle, he had a fighting chance to pass Eric Kramer’s single-season passing yard record that he set back in 1995. However, Williams barely mustering over 100 yards in the 6-3 loss means he will need 445 passing yards in the Chicago Bears’ week 18 matchup with Green Bay to break the record.
The Chicago Bears front office needs to do plenty of work to retool the roster for next year to help Williams succeed in his second season. Both sides of the ball need massive upgrades in the trenches, and it looks likely that the organization will need to bring in three new offensive linemen to help protect Williams moving forward.
Having three projected draft picks along with decent cap space should certainly help these efforts in improving the team following this abysmal year. On top of it all, hiring the right head coach to lead the way is a pressing issue that is seen as the biggest hire in the history of the franchise.
