During the latest installment of the Spittin Chiclets podcast, the Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues was addressed. This was in addition to interviews with Taylor Hall and the eventual MVP of the 6-2 St. Louis victory, Cam Fowler.
The Chicago Blackhawks’ general manager Kyle Davidson was not happy with the team following the Winter Classic loss
Ryan Whitney mentioned in the podcast that Davidson ripped into the team hard following the embarrassing contest on national television. The 6-2 loss in which the team got outworked in every fashion imaginable exposed to the entire hockey world that they were never good enough to be featured in the Winter Classic this year, to begin with. The NHL knew that this was purely a marketing opportunity and that the squad is far from competing for a championship.
Whitney is a man of many words and he made sure his opinion on the Blackhawks was heard loud and clear following the New Year’s Eve loss at Wrigley Field.
“This team (Chicago) is legit horrible,” Whitney said. “They’re getting blown out every game.”
Whitney went on to tell the story of how the team could not get off the ice during their end-of-practice game because they struggled to score five goals on netminder Petr Mrazek. He recalled every media member near the ice looking around in shock as they were there for over 35 minutes.
“I feel bad for Chicago,” Whitney added. “Maybe there’s better days to come. Appearently, the GM (Kyle Davidson) went in after the game and was giving it to the team. It’s like I don’t know man.”
The Chicago Blackhawks have failed the fanbase big time this season
With the team currently sitting dead last in the NHL with 26 points entering Friday night’s home battle against Montreal, it’s safe to say that this season for the Chicago Blackhawks has been a complete failure. While the key free-agent signings made by the front office are playing better as of late, the group has remained the same in terms of on-ice production.
One thing that the organization has done this year that fans have been able to smile about is promoting young pieces to the NHL roster. Frank Nazar got the call from Rockford earlier in December and while his numbers don’t show it, he looks more comfortable at the highest level every game. Colton Dach got recalled Thursday morning and is set to make his NHL debut on Friday at the United Center.
Despite the young core making their rounds, it is still disappointing to see the lack of production surrounding Connor Bedard in his second season. The phenom went on a 12-game goal-scoring drought and hasn’t seen as much success as Chicago Blackhawks fans were looking for this year. The potential for the 19-year-old is still there and he should have a more than successful career in Chicago, but the struggles from himself and the team are frustrating to watch.
The upcoming draft features a few very promising forward prospects in James Hagens, Porter Martone and Michael Misa, Everyone around the organization will yet again be praying for the ping-pong balls to go their way at the draft lottery for the third straight year for the rights to select any of these prospects.
