The Chicago Cubs are getting a much needed boost to their rotation this week, just in time for the Crosstown Cup series against the Chicago White Sox.
Starter Kyle Hendricks is set to return from the DL on Monday and make the start at Wrigley Field against the White Sox.
Hendricks will be activated to the team’s roster to make the start, moving Mike Montgomery out of the rotation and into the bullpen. Montgomery has started in 8 games for the Cubs this season and has pitched well filling in while the Cubs have seen injury issues to their rotation.
In 2016 Hendricks posted an MLB-best 2.13 ERA as he helped pitch the Cubs to a World Series title. He’s been on the DL since June 8th with a finger injury and last pitched June 4th against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Hendricks is 4-3 in 11 starts this season with a 4.09 ERA. He struggled with his command to start the season but started to turn it around before suffering his injury.
The Cubs are red hot to start the second half, going 7-1 and cutting the Milwaukee Brewers lead down to 1 game in the NL Central. A big reason for that start is the hot starting pitching thus far through 8 games.
If Hendricks can return to 2016 form, Chicago’s rotation might just carry them back into the postseason for another run at a World Series title.
The Cubs also announced that John Lackey will start Tuesday’s game at Wrigley Field with Jake Arrieta going Wednesday and Jon Lester Thursday at Guaranteed Rate Field on the South Side.
