As the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers prepare to meet in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series on Saturday, some big news dropped ahead of first pitch.
Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber has been added to the team’s Arizona Fall League “Taxi Squad” roster. What does that mean? Well that means Schwarber is eligible to play in the AFL from Saturday-Wednesday with possibility of being a DH in the World Series.
Schwarber has missed all but a few games this season after tearing his medial collateral and lateral collateral ligaments in the left knee.
The 23-year-old is expected to be in the lineup on Saturday night for the Mesa Solar Sox. Here’s what The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma writes:
While the Cubs face Clayton Kershaw for the right to make their first World Series since 1945, Schwarber will be taking cuts at Sloan Park and the goal is to hit in Cleveland next week, according to a major league source.
After months of people joking about his return as a DH, it’s now possible the Cubs’ all-time postseason home run leader would return from a knee injury much earlier than expected.
Schwarber was one of the Cubs heroes in their 2015 postseason run as he hit five home runs including two monster shots including one that landed on the video board in right field against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Of course, the Cubs still have to win one more NLCS game to reach the World Series, but this is pretty interesting timing. They will try and do so on Saturday night against Clayton Kershaw at Wrigley Field.
