The Chicago Bears are interviewing Eddie George at Halas Hall on Sunday morning in what appears to be a sham bid to finish their requirement with the league’s Rooney Rule.
The Bears are racing to complete the requirement following the Washington Commanders 45-31 upset over the Detroit Lions on Saturday night at Ford Field. The Bears interviewed both of the Lions coordinators, OC Ben Johnson and DC Aaron Glenn.
With Detroit out of the playoffs, the Bears can interview Glenn or Johnson as soon as Monday.
The Bears’ strongest competition for Johnson are the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars. The Raiders have made a strong pitch to Johnson, and they’re making a key move to land the 38-year-old offensive mind.
The Las Vegas Raiders are interviewing a person Ben Johnson wants
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Raiders are interviewing Washington’s assistant general manager Lance Newmark for their open GM job.
“Raiders are interviewing former Lions executive and current Commanders assistant GM Lance Newmark today for their general manager job, per sources,” Schefter posted on X. “Newmark spent 26 seasons in Detroit before joining Washington last year, and is said to have a strong relationship with both Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn.”

Albert Breet of Sports Illustrated pointed out that Newmark is a top GM interest of Johnson.
“We mentioned potential for a Ben Johnson/Lance Newmark marriage in our Future GM column earlier this month,” Breer posted on X. “And Newmark’s emergence in the Raiders’ fray certainly could be on Johnson’s recommendation. Alignment with a GM is a top factor for Johnson.”

The Chicago Bears’ power structure at Halas Hall is a drawback
The Bears took a risk by having a confusing power imbalance between CEO Kevin Warren and GM Ryan Poles. Johnson, and any coach joining Chicago, will have to be okay with joining a GM on the hot seat with a strong president.
Franchise quarterback or no, Johnson might like the way the Raiders run their operations more.
