It’s no secret the Chicago Bulls want to upgrade at the point guard position before the start of the 2019-20 season. Even with Kris Dunn on the roster, Chicago is hoping to find a permanent starter for the future.
They are likely to do that in the 2019 NBA Draft but it may not be how many expect.
While the prospects of landing a player like Darius Garland or Coby White seems like the ideal route, the Bulls appear to be intrigued by a point guard who will enter his third season in 2019-20. Several outlets are connecting the Bulls to Los Angeles Lakers’ point guard Lonzo Ball in a deal that would include giving up the No. 7 overall pick.
K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune broke down the Bulls point guard options through the draft, trade and free agency. He spotlighted Garland and White but labeled them being behind a few teams that need a point guard including the Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns. Here is what Johnson wrote on the situation: Zion Williamson
When the Bulls’ dream of landing Zion Williamson or Ja Morant by winning the first or second pick in the draft died, the focus immediately shifted to Vanderbilt’s Darius Garland and North Carolina’s Coby White.
One issue is the Bulls dropped behind two teams — the Grizzlies and Suns — who also are focused on a point guard and a third in the Lakers who could draft one to make Lonzo Ball expendablein an attempt to trade for the Pelican’s Anthony Davis.
Ball intrigues the Bulls as a pass-first, defensive-minded point guard with positional size who can best maximize the talents of Lauri Markkanen, Zach LaVine and Wendell Carter Jr.
With Los Angeles and New Orleans potentially trying to work on a deal surrounding Davis, Ball could be a piece that goes to Chicago. The Bulls would have to give up the No. 7 overall pick which would likely go to New Orleans in the deal.
Through his first two years in the NBA, Ball is averaging 10 points, 6.4 assists, and 6.2 rebounds per game. The former No. 2 overall pick is also shooting 38% from the field and 32% from the three-point line.
