Chicago — After Randy Wells out-dueled Cole Hamels for 7 innings and and the Cubs had the lead 1-0 thanks to a Starlin Castro lead off double and and RBI bunt single from Ryan Theriot, the Cubs seemed poised for a three-game sweep of the visting Philadelphia Phillies. However, that was not be as Cubs closer Carlos Marmol (2-2) completely imploded allowing 4 runs on just one hit while walking 5.
The often dominant Cub closer blew his 4th save of the year in 21 chances. This outing was not unlike most as a staggering 75% of batters he faces never put the ball in play and today 6 0ut of 8 either struck out or walked.
The Phillies activated Placido Polanco from the DL today and he tied the game with a two out single in the 9th and would later score.

All in all. This series was pretty promising save for Marmol’s implosion. But it’s well known that this is a risk with him, as it is with most closers.
