The Chicago Cubs got bad news about starting pitcher Matt Garza on Sunday and questions surrounding pitching were answered.
Matt Garza:
Starting pitcher Matt Garza will open the 2013 season on the disabled list. There’s a great chance Garza will miss the whole month on April and return in May sometime.
Garza’s lat strain flared up again on Sunday and is not ready to throw yet.
Dale Sveum said; “Garza did not have a setback, he just needs more time.”
Garza said; “I will shoot for the second week in April.”
Garza will not begin throwing for at least 5-7 more days.
Starting pitching:
Sveum named Jeff Samardzija the opening day starter. The decision was made easier with the Garza news.
Sveum also said Travis Wood and Carlos Villanueva will be penciled into the starting rotation.
The starting rotation could look like this to open the season … Jeff Samardzija, Edwin Jackson, Scott Feldman, Travis Wood and Carlos Villanueva.
Don’t forget, Scott Baker will start the season on the DL as well recovering from Tommy John Surgery.
There may only be 2 competitions left in camp … who will be super utility and who will be the 5th OF. My picks are Brett Lillibridge as super utility and Dave Sappelt as the 5th OF.
