Former Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy had one season with Justin Fields, but that season did not go well. Fields spent the first few months of his career as the backup to Andy Dalton, earning limited reps in training camp with the first team.
He finally got his chance to start when Dalton went down in the win over Cincinnati. But from there, things got rocky for Chicago’s offense as a whole. The season was a failure, leading to the ouster of Nagy.
But following his firing, Nagy had nothing but positive things to say about the quarterback.
Kyle Brandt, co-host of “Good Morning Football,” said this week on the “Rich Eisen Show” he had a text exchange with Nagy after he was fired about Fields.
Here’s the quote on the Rich Eisen Show via Logan Mullen on Audacy:
“Candidly, after he was released I had a text exchange with Matt Nagy, after he was let go,” Brandt said. “And I thought he was really cool and I thought he was really magnanimous, and he just said ‘Someday maybe you and I can talk about this, but I can tell you this: Justin Fields has it. He has everything. He is the real deal, they got the right guy, he will be a star in this league.’ And went on to explain some things about why it didn’t work out.
“This is a private text. He could’ve easily said that guy is a fraud, he should’ve stayed in college. He loves him, loves him. And (Nagy) had nothing to gain from that.”
It was nice to see Nagy take the high road in that exchange. Hopefully, his analysis is spot on, and Fields will be able to improve in Luke Getsy’s offense.
Fields looked like a rookie overall last season, as the former Ohio State Buckeye threw 7 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. Many analysts felt Nagy’s offensive scheme didn’t put the rookie in a position to succeed.
