The Chicago Cubs have a ton of top prospects that fans all should know such as Matt Shaw, Owen Caissie, and Cade Horton, to name a few.
All of whom, figure to make their debut at some point this season and help the Cubs in their chances at making the playoffs this season.
However, since trading away former top prospect Michael Arias, the Cubs elevated another very intriguing prospect to the top 30 list.
Chicago Cubs Eli Lovich (No. 29 prospect)
The 19-year-old Lovich will be making his pro-ball debut this season for the Cubs after being drafted by them in the eleventh round of last year’s draft. Since the Cubs designated their former top prospect Michael Arias for assignment, who was later traded to the New York Yankees for cash considerations, Lovich was elevated to the Cub’s top 30 list.
The Blue Valley West High School grad has decent grades on MLB.com with his best grades being his speed and his arm with grading at 55/80. Lovich’s hit, power, and field all rank at 50/80, but given some time down in the minor leagues those grades could change.
The 2024 Prep Baseball Kansas Player of the Year winner Lovich had an outstanding season where he had a .414 average, had 39 hits, hit 8 doubles, 6 triples, 5 homers, and drove in 36 RBI. Lovich also was able to score 37 runs and was 15/16 in stolen bases. What was impressive is that the tall and lanky lefty only struck out seven times in just 87 at-bats.
Perfect Game describes Lovich as:
“A left-handed hitter with a tall and narrow base, slightly open stance, and had a high back elbow. He uses load and stride timing to get through the zone with some bat speed, creating leverage in his swing. He’s on time and athletic in the batters’ box with juice showing and a good feel for the barrel. The ball comes off hot; he produced an 89 mph exit velocity. Solid round of BP from the lefty.”
What does 2025 have in store for Lovich?
Given that this will be Lovich’s first year in professional baseball, Lovich will start in either Low-A or High-A to start the season. If Lovich can have success at the lower levels for the first part of the season he could potentially make his way up to Double-A to finish the year.
