Last week, the Chicago Bears put in a request to interview former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. The Cowboys denied the request, but McCarthy is free to interview with the team after Dallas chose to let the 61-year-old walk into free agency on Monday.
Buckle up for a lot of McCarthy-Bears news.
(Update): McCarthy will interview with the Bears on Wednesday, per Pro Football Talk.
The Chicago Bears have a real interest in Mike McCarthy
Per Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, McCarthy wanted job security in Dallas. However, owner Jerry Jones was not willing to give McCarthy and his staff a multi-year deal. Rapoport named the Bears and New Orleans Saints as two teams that will have “serious” interest in hiring McCarthy as their next head coach.
“So I expect the New Orleans Saints, the Chicago Bears, to have real and serious interest in McCarthy, as they should,” Rapoport said. “And I would expect the Dallas Cowboys to have a really, really coveted opening.”
Chicago is gaining competition in the hiring market. But fortunately, they’re also gaining a candidate with plenty of success in the league. McCarthy has a .608 winning percentage (174-112-2) in the regular season.
McCarthy finalist for the job?
Despite McCarthy being just another name on the Bears’ list of candidates, Rapoport believes Chicago’s interest in McCarthy is legitimate. Bears insider Bill Zimmerman thinks McCarthy will be a finalist for the job in Chicago.
“To be clear, I’m just having fun here, but I would expect Mike McCarthy to be a finalist in Chicago (assuming they have about 5),” Zimmerman posted on X.

Many Bears fans on social media seem to think the franchise is too good for the Super Bowl-winning head coach. However, he’s seen as a valuable mind in the league, and Chicago would be wise to see what he has to offer.
After all, the option of Ben Johnson might not be on the table soon.
