Per the NFL Network‘s Tom Pelissero, the Chicago Bears are set to interview Mike McCarthy on Wednesday. McCarthy is heading into free agency after spending his previous five seasons as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
McCarthy’s name is just a grain of sand on the Lake Michigan Beach of Bears candidates this offseason. However, the 61-year-old coach will likely be one of the finalists for Chicago. He should, as McCarthy won Super Bowl XLV with the Green Bay Packers and boasts a .608 winning percentage (174-112-2) as a head coach.
Why the Chicago Bears would want Mike McCarthy
Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune explained why the Bears’ front office wants to hear from McCarthy. McCarthy’s 11 postseason wins are something Chicago hasn’t seen in 60 years.
“Let’s talk about the playoff success,” Biggs said on 670 The Score‘s “Mully and Haugh Show.” “Mike McCarthy, 11 playoff wins in his career. If you guys want to do a little exercise and count the last 11 times the Bears have won a postseason game, that would take you all the way back to Wrigley Field in the 1963 championship game, a 14-10 victory over the Giants.
“That’s why when you get these new people that come through Halas Hall and they talk about the rich tradition of the organization, you know, I wonder if they are really clued into how mediocre it’s been for the last, say, 60 years anyway.”
Biggs thinks McCarthy has proved he runs a smooth operation during his two stints as a head coach with the Packers and Cowboys. As a playcaller for Dallas the last two seasons, McCarthy has been active in game planning and wouldn’t be a disconnected CEO coach.
McCarthy wants to beat the Packers
Biggs thinks McCarthy has one skillset that will be intriguing to chairman George McCaskey. McCarthy has beaten the Bears 19 times and knows the NFC North. More importantly, McCarthy will be extra motivated to beat the Packers.
“(McCarthy) knows the division,” Biggs said. “He’s going to be supremely motivated, I think, to beat the Packers. That right there ought to make him a very viable candidate for George McCasky anyway, right? Like, that’s George’s vision and goal every day is to find a way to beat the Packers.”
The fan base might not be sold, but the front office could be after Wednesday.
