On Christmas Eve, we ran a story about former Chicago Bears quarterback Chase Daniel’s idea that Mike McCarthy could be Matt Eberflus’ replacement for 2025. Chatter is reportedly circulating around the league about the possibility.
McCarthy’s contract with the Dallas Cowboys is set to expire after Week 18, and the former Super Bowl-winning coach of the Green Bay Packers will enter free agency.
Chase Daniel’s idea for the Chicago Bears
Daniel thought quarterback Caleb Williams would pair well with McCarthy.
“I think a fascinating choice though for Mike, and hopefully, he’s looking into this, would be the Chicago Bears,” Daniels said on FS1‘s The Facility. “Because you know that division, you have a rookie quarterback who you would say at the time, when he’s coming out, is more developed than Dak Prescott, a fourth-round pick was right?
“You have an old-school mentality, which is what the Chicago Bears need, and you don’t have to deal with a crazy owner. Now, I don’t think it’s going to happen, but there’s other teams out there that I can make a case for Mike going to, like I could imagine Mike McCarthy and Caleb Williams together. Like, it makes sense. So, it’s just crazy how it swung the pendulum swung sort of the power is back in Mike’s hands.”
Mike McCarthy to the Bears theory is gaining traction
Many readers initially thought the idea might be far-fetched. However, Jeremy Fowler with ESPN is hearing about the possibility in league circles.
“I’ve talked to multiple people who believe McCarthy — should he leave Dallas — could set his sights on Chicago. He would give the Bears much-needed experience and offensive acumen,” Fowler wrote. “Despite his rocky tenure in Dallas, McCarthy would stack up well if parachuting into this candidate pool and provide leadership.
”He turned 61 in November but seems to have the energy for the job. He’s quite familiar with NFC North football, too. This might not graduate from a working theory stage, but enough people have mentioned the scenario to make it worth mentioning here.”
The assumption seems to be that McCarthy would return to Dallas on a one-year contract at best. If that’s the case, It would be in McCarthy’s interest to leave in free agency unless the Cowboys tack on multiple years. Any contract he’d sign with the Bears would be for multiple years.
The incentive is for McCarthy to leave–if any team in the NFL wants him in the 2025 coaching cycle.
