The Chicago Bears sent shockwaves through the NFL in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft by trading up to select University of North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
Chicago’s interest in Trubisky was kept quiet until they selected him No. 2 overall. General Manager Ryan Pace revealed on draft night that the two sides met in a private meeting in Chapel Hill, as the Bears got to know the rising quarterback.
At the time of the selection, we didn’t know much about that meeting until now. And the best detail is how Trubisky won over the Bears by using an alias to make a dinner reservation.
The Chicago Tribune’s Dan Wiederer reveals how Trubisky won over Pace and Company with a fantastic story:
Trubisky took the directive and pieced things together.
Before Pace and his cohorts arrived on campus, the Bears GM had a text. Dinner at 7 p.m.
The venue: Bin 54, a top steakhouse in North Carolina’s Triangle region. And to keep the gathering covert, Trubisky made the reservation for six under an alias: James McMahon.
“I thought that was cool,” Pace says.
In translation, Trubisky used former Chicago Bears Super Bowl winning quarterback Jim McMahon’s name as an alias.
We don’t know how Trubisky will translate to the NFL but him naming Walter Payton as his favorite player then paying homage to McMahon is pretty damn cool to us.
