With the Chicago Cubs struggling in 2022, many are already looking toward potential trade deadline moves. Perhaps the most valuable trade piece the Cubs currently have is Willson Contreras. The team traded away several core players at last season’s trade deadline. Many expect Contreras to meet the same fate.
Contreras has been in the Cubs organization since 2009 when he signed as an international free agent. Contreras is now in his 7th season with the big league club and there is a strong chance it could be his last. Contreras has been one of the top catchers in baseball this season and his trade value continues to climb. What would the Cubs get in return if they decide to trade him? Jon Heyman with the New York Post gives us an idea:
“The belief is that the Cubs are expected to spend again next winter following a season of mostly piecemeal signings. Seiya Suzuki and Marcus Stroman were obviously exceptions. … Willson Contreras will be a popular trade target, and one exec predicts, “The Cubs will want an arm and a leg.”
It remains unclear what potential trade packages may look like, but the Cubs will be asking a lot for Willson Contreras. There is still a large part of the season that remains until the trade deadline in early August. If the Cubs continue to struggle, they may attempt to sell high on some players before the deadline even arrives.
Many believe that Willson Contreras brings tremendous leadership to the clubhouse. With the Cubs beginning to call up several top prospects, there is a slim possibility that they hold on to Contreras for his valuable experience and veteran leadership.
Look at how the young players gravitate to Willson. He’s the perfect leader to lead the next era of Cubs baseball.

Much like last season, the Cubs roster will likely look very different after the trade deadline. What the Cubs decide to do with Willson Contreras has yet to be seen. A trade certainly seems to be the most likely outcome.
