The Hot Stove has been cold thus far at the 2017 Winter Meetings but it feels like things are ready to get going. Aside from the Giancarlo Stanton trade, there hasn’t been much activity.
Despite that, things could explode at any moment now.
One MLB Insider hinted that the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres could be making a deal and are perfect partners for a trade this offseason. Yahoo’s Jeff Passan tweeted out that the Padres are seeking some help in the middle infield and have been very active in talks at the Winter Meetings.
He also pointed out that the Cubs are a match to keep an eye on:
Sources: The San Diego Padres continue to be one of the more active teams at the Winter Meetings. There's traction to their talks with Eric Hosmer, and they're seeking a young, under-control shortstop. One match to keep an eye on: The Chicago Cubs.

The Padres made a trade with the New York Yankees earlier on Tuesday, re-acquiring Chase Headley. Now, they seem ready to strike some deals and acquire big names like Eric Hosmer and a Cubs middle infielder.
That would mean the Cubs would part ways with either Addison Russell or Javier Baez in the deal. If that’s the case, the Cubs would likely want an arm back in the deal.
Looking at the Padres, is there really a pitcher that would be worth Russell or Baez? Not on the major league level but the Cubs could look at the Padres farm system which is ranked No. 3 by MLB.com.
The Padres have prospects: MacKenzie Gore (LHP), Cal Quantrill (RHP), Luis Urias (INF), Fernando Tatis Jr. (SS), Adrian Morejon (LHP) and Anderson Espinoza (RHP).
A deal right now just doesn’t make a lot of sense for the Cubs unless they get a prospect in return. Still, it’s interesting to hear the Cubs mentioned with the Padres.
