With just six days left until the 2015 NFL season kicksoff, we are inching closer and closer to actual football that matters. To continue our series of the most important Chicago Bears for the upcoming season, we take a look at a member of the offensive line.
No. 10 | No. 9 | No. 8 | No. 7 |
Jermon Bushrod
After a preseason in which Bushrod looked bad, to say the least, the Bears are going to need a lot more from the veteran left tackle. Bushrod’s ailing back was clearly a factor in the preseason and if it doesn’t get any better, the Bears are going to be in trouble.
Bushrod wasn’t his normal self in pass protection during the preseason and he couldn’t finish a run block to seemingly save his life. There were also a few key penalties that impacted drives and gave the first clues that the Bears may have a problem in the 31-year-old.
While Bushrod continues to be sidelined by the back problem in practice, he was still listed as the team’s starting left tackle. But that’s a problem because after Bushrod, there aren’t may options. The team recently claimed 25-year-old Patrick Omameh off of waivers, but he might not be a viable replacement for Bushrod.
The injury certainly impacts the Bears protection of quarterback Jay Cutler who could be in for a world of hurt if Bushrod doesn’t improve. Protecting Cutler’s blindside and allowing him to make plays down the field will be part of the Bears recipe of success but it’s not looking good for now.
Bushrod’s health could just be one of the deciding factors in the Bears success this season.
