Michael Jordan and the 90s Chicago Bulls have been getting quite the revival in media in the past few years. The beloved-international athlete and Chicago icon is about to be portrayed in an upcoming film starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
Reportedly, the movie will be about Jordan signing with the athletic sportswear company Nike in 1984.
Matt Donnelly in Variety writes:
“The Oscar winner and co-screenwriter of “Good Will Hunting” is re-teaming with his Boston bestie Matt Damon on a new feature film from Amazon Studios, Skydance Sports and Mandalay Pictures. It will center on the sports marketing executive who relentlessly pursued basketball legend Michael Jordan in the mid-’80s. Affleck will direct, star and co-write. Damon will produce, co-write and star.
The “Argo” director will play Nike co-founder and billionaire Phil Knight. Damon will star as Sonny Vaccaro — whose pursuit of Jordan to partner with the shoe brand seemed impossible at the time, but would become the most significant relationship between an athletic brand and player in the global, multi-billion-dollar sneaker industry.”
Jordan has done well himself signing with Nike; the former North Carolina Tar Heels and Chicago Bulls phenom has been paid approximately 1.3 billion by Forbes estimate in 2020. Nike had been trying to sign a NBA star for years before landing Jordan. The move helped build Nike into the giant company it is today.
HBO’s hit show Winning Time had a storyline this season about Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson singing with Converse over Nike, a decision Johnson said he still “kicks” himself for.

Damon and Affleck are excellent writers, directors, and actors, so we can anticipate the movie will be high-quality entertainment. This movie will be sure to draw a lot of attention when it’s ready to be released. The Last Dance, about Jordan’s last season with the Bulls, drew a lot of attention when it was released in 2020.
This is exciting news for Jordan fans to take a behind-the-scenes look at how the sausage of business in sports gets made.
