The Chicago Cubs are expected to call up outfielder Matt Szczur after the game, according to reports. Before today’s game, the Cubs optioned outfielder Junior Lake to Triple-A Iowa and called up starting pitcher Dan Straily. Straily was called up for a spot start to give the other starters an extra day of rest. After the game, the Cubs will option Straily back to Triple-A Iowa and are expected to call up Szczur to take over Lake’s spot on the roster.
The Cubs have not make anything official and will after the game. The speculation arose that Szczur was the guy to get the call to take Lake’s spot on the roster when he was not seen at the ballpark for Triple A today and was seen later giving hugs to players on the roster before heading to the Cubs.
The Cubs drafted Szczur is the 5th round of the 2010 draft and Szczur is 25-years old. This season for Triple-A Iowa, Szczur had a line of .261/.315/.313/.626 with 1 home run, 24 runs batted in, 30 stolen bases, 30 walks and struck out 78 times in 457 at-bats.
Junior Lake will head down to Triple-A to get regular at bats and playing time. Lake will be back in three weeks when rosters expand in September, per manager Rick Renteria. Straily will likely re-join the Cubs at the same as well.
