Earlier this month, NFL.com’s Adam Schein ranked each division based on the group of quarterbacks each division had. Schein ranked the NFC North as the division featuring the best quarterback group heading into the 2018 season.
The NFC North features Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Kirk Cousins, Mitchell Trubisky. There are high expectations for all four based on their prior achievements and what’s projected from them this season.
The division features three quarterbacks in Rogers, Cousins, and Stafford who have eight Pro-Bowl appearances combined. Trubisky was the first quarterback taken in last year’s NFL Draft being selected before Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes. Last season, all four quarterbacks combined for 79 touchdown passes while only throwing 36 interceptions. Only Cousins and Stafford of the four played full 16 game season in 2017.
This season, both the Packers and Vikings are viewed as possible Super Bowl contenders because of Rodgers and Cousins. In each season Rodgers has been healthy, the Packers have played deep into the playoffs. The Vikings viewed Cousins as the missing piece to their team that lost in the 2018 NFC Championship so much that they fully guaranteed his contract in free agency, a three-year deal worth 84 million dollars, a first in NFL free agency history.
The Lions hired former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia this season but kept a majority of their offensive coaches in place because of Stafford’s sustained success over the past few seasons with the Lions offense. Big things are expected from not only Bears management, but also many around the league regarding Trubisky’s ability to jump to the next level as a top tier quarterback.
The ranking comes as a surprise as for the last several years, only Rodgers was mentioned when talking about quarterbacks from the NFC North. Now each team has a recognizable face at quarterback with the possibility of putting up big numbers. If the ranking holds true, the divisional matchups this season could be very exciting to watch from a scoring standpoint.
