The Chicago Bears are in the midst of their most important coaching in arguably the history of the franchise after a disappointing 2024 season. They had to fire Matt Eberflus after another tough moment in the loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day.
So far, the Bears have interviewed many major names around the NFL and college football, and the search will enter its second week with more interviews to come. And now, one name is emerging as the favorite to land the job in Chicago, including on the betting market.
Highly coveted coaching candidate has highest odds to become Bears HC
The most popular head coaching candidate in this NFL off-season is none other than Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. According to Betonline, Ben Johnson has the highest odds to become Bears head coach:
Ben Johnson has the betting favorite of becoming the next Bears head coach with odds of (-125). Cardinals OC Kliff Kingsbury is at (+500) and former Seahawks HC Pete Carroll is at (+500). Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman is a long shot with (+1400).
The betting odds for this could shift soon due to the news of Mike McCarthy leaving the Cowboys, and due to Tom Brady actively recruiting Ben Johnson to potentially join the Las Vegas Raider for their head coach opening.
Johnson is clearly one of the most sought out coaching candidates in the NFL. The leader of the Lions offense has received heavy interest from the Bears, Patriots, Raiders, and Jaguars. Johnson interviewed with these teams virtually last week. The Patriots hired Mike Vrabel yesterday so they can be officially ruled out,
Out of the three teams left that are interested in Johnson, it looks like that the Bears are still the odds-on favorite to land him as their new head coach. However, the Raiders are lurking on and also have a good chance at landing Johnson.
The Bears need to decide quickly on Ben Johnson
The Bears are going to need to act fast and make a decision quickly on Johnson. There has been reports out how the Las Vegas Raiders have a very high interest in hiring Johnson, to the point where Raiders minority owner Tom Brady is attempting to recruit him. Johnson is going to be able to decide on coaching a Bears team with plenty of talent on offense and a franchise quarterback to develop, or join the Raiders and work for arguably the greatest quarterback of all time.
Since taking over as Lions offensive coordinator, Johnson has proved he deserves a head coaching gig. It would be very interesting to see how he would continue the development of Caleb Williams. With the weapons the Bears have such as DJ Moore and Rome Odunze, the Bears offense can take a massive step forward with Johnson as head coach.
In my opinion, Ben Johnson is no doubt the best option for the Bears. It’s time for the Bears to finally go with an offensive head coach. Johnson has been a phenomenal play caller and he would be the perfect head coach to turn Caleb Williams into the star he should be. Ryan Poles and Kevin Warren need to finally get this hire right.
