The 3-4 defense has many needs to function properly and lock down cornerbacks are a big part of the process. The Bears have had strong play from the corner position, but age has caught up with them. Fortunately, there are some good corners on the free agent market.
Byron Maxwell
Byron plays with an identity. He is not the most known name on the Seattle defense, but he gets it done. He is a willing tackler, and able to make plays in space. Maxwell would set the tone on the back end of the Bears defense.
UPDATE: Maxwell will sign with the Philadelphia Eagles
Buster Skrine
He is another under-the-radar player. Skrine has silently been a lights out corner for the Browns defense for a few seasons now. He may be expensive, but he would be worth it.
Kareem Jackson
There is not a lot of conversation about the Houston defensive backs, which is an injustice. Jackson plays bigger than his frame. He has great recovery speed, and is a willing tackler. He would be a great value signing.
UPDATE: Kareem Jackson to remain with Texans
Chris Culliver
He may come with some baggage, but if the Bears can clear the air, he would be a good pickup. Culliver is a big, strong corner, who can lock down his man. People remember his side of the field after a hit.
Antonio Cromartie
Cromartie may be north of 30, but he still gets it done on a consistent basis. He has the rare combo of size and speed, and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. He would provide some much needed veteran leadership.
If the Bears are unable to grab one of the top guys, there are some options who can definitely get the job done. Keep your eyes out for Walter Thurmond, especially in the slot, Perrish Cox and Chris Cook. As per usual these days, everyone involved would be an immediate upgrade.
