The biggest move the Chicago Cubs made at the trade deadline was the acquisition of outfielder Nick Castellanos from the Detroit Tigers. Chicago sent two pitching prospects for Castellanos and so far, the move has paid off.
Entering Tuesday’s series opener against the San Francisco Giants, Castellanos was slashing .348/.392/.710 in 17 games with his new ball club and hit 6 home runs while driving in 8 RBI’s. Castellanos was a guest of guest of the Laurence Holmes Show on Tuesday afternoon along with reliever Derek Holland for the Cubs On Deck Luncheon series.
When Holmes brought up Joe Maddon’s quote from an audio clip of him praising Castellanos play so far, the outfielder couldn’t help but break down and shed a tear:
The show can be found here and it’s worth listening to, especially if you’re a Cubs fan or a fan of Castellanos in general.
The 27-year-old has spent the past few seasons with a struggling Detroit team that has had no shot of making the playoffs. He now has the chance to be in the postseason with the Cubs and he’s certainly doing his part.
Castellano’s homered in his first at-bat on Tuesday night, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead.
