On August 1st, the Chicago White Sox called up outfielder Nicky Delmonico to take the place of Willie Garcia who was sidelined with a broken jaw.
Since being called up, Delmonico has impressed the organization and fans with his performance at the plate.
With the massive hype surrounding all the prospects the White Sox have compiled over the last year, it’s Delmonico who is making his case to be apart of the rebuild going forward.
Delmonico is making quite a name for himself as he has reached base safely in all 13 games he has played and currently has an 11-game hitting streak.
He has posted slash line which consists of batting average, on base percentage, and slugging percentage of .396/.463/.625. Delmonico has racked up four multi-hit games during the 11 game hit streak as well.
On Wednesday night, Delmonico had his first multi-home run game as he hit two home runs against the Dodgers in Los Angeles during the White Sox loss. His first home run came against one of the MLB’s best pitchers in Yu Darvish and then again in the 8th inning against premiere reliever Tony Watson.
Two of Delmonico’s three home runs this season have come off 2016 Cy Young winner Rick Porcello and 2013 American League strike out leader in Darvish.
With Sox fans have zoned in during the year on the top prospects such as Eloy Jiminez and Reynaldo Lopez, Delmonico’s name flew underneath as he performed well in the farm system. He wasn’t seen as being a possible piece for the future but that might be changing.
The White Sox are Delmonico’s third team during his professional baseball career as he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2011. He was traded to the Milwaukee Brewer organization in 2013 before being released and signed by the White Sox in 2015.
Delmonico was not ranked at all in 2017 on MLB’ top 100 prospects before being called up and was really only seen to be a replacement while Garcia healed from his broken jaw.
If Delmonico can stay consistent, he offers the White Sox a valuable piece for the rebuild going ahead with his mix of contact and power at the plate.
He can play both outfield and infield and his left handed bat is valuable as the White Sox only have two left handed bats that figure to be apart the rebuild with catcher Zach Collins and outfielder Blake Rutherford.
The biggest question mark with Delmonico going forward shouldn’t be how long he can keep his hit streak going, but how he responses to when the league makes their adjustments to him. Delmonico has already been making his own adjustments as he has been driving the ball with more power to right field in his last three games.
His success so far has been so rewarding because it was truly unexpected and as the losses mount for the White Sox, Delmonico is showing his case to be here when the winning begins.
